Family Details Destene is a curious boy who lives with his mom. They've had a very hard life. His mom was orphaned as a baby in the 1994 genocide when all her family was killed leaving her no living relatives. As an adult, she married Destene's father and then developed a brain tumor. Her husband cared for her, and she survived the brain tumor, but it changed the husband and their relationship suffered. Shortly after that she became pregnant with Destene and one day his dad left the house and never returned. This left his mom devastated and alone. She struggles to provide even basic needs for Destene such as food, clothes, health insurance and school fees.
